Renaissance Period History of Glass

Renaissance to 18th Century

The major contribution of Venetians was the development of highly refined, hard-soda glass of great difficulty. Colorless and highly transparent, the glass resembled crystal and was known as Cristallo.

Renaissance to 18th Century

The blowers exploited the workable nature of their material to product a fanciful tour de force. Some containers were blown entirely opaque white, and painted with enamels to create Chinese porcelain.

Renaissance to 18th Century

Softer, more brilliant, and more durable that the brittle cristallo, English lead glass was considered the finest glass of the 18th century.
